Why you should invest in wind power

by , 20 November 2015

Wind power is all about harnessing the power of the wind through turbines to produce energy. It's a way to generate electricity that's environmentally friendly and it is growing in popularity.

In Scotland, for instance, many wind farms now sit across the landscape, using nature's power to generate electricity.

But are there any issues with turbines? And is it a sector worth investing in?

Let's take a closer look…

The problem with wind turbines

The wind turbines used on land are immense structures. The more turbines you have, the more power you generate. But the more turbines you have, the more noise they make.
Wind farms tend to be stuck out in the back of beyond so noise isn’t necessarily an issue, but turbines have been known to kill bats and birds, which is a problem.
So whilst renewable forms of energy, such as wind power, are in demand, they come with their challenges.
But these problems can be easily resolved if you take the turbines offshore, David Fessler in Investment U explains. This is popular in Europe, but not so far in the US. But the US is now committed to introducing offshore wind farms.

The growth potential in wind energy

In Europe, 8GW of power contributes to the 128.7GW the continent produces. Offshore wind capacity has grown 31.2% in the five years to the end of 2014.
Offshore wind turbines tend to be larger than land based ones. There are two companies that are at the top of the wind turbine game. These companies are Siemens AG and Vestas Wind.
If you want to exploit growth in this key sector, offshore wind turbines are a great way to do it and these two companies should benefit.
With wind energy accounting for only 3% of electricity at the moment, this could grow to between 17% and 19% by 2020. Great growth potential.
So there you have it. Why you should invest in wind power.
