Acting competition commissioner revealed after porn scandal

by , 21 October 2013

Yesterday it emerged that the man at the helm of the Competitions Commission, Shan Ramburuth, had whittled away thousands of rands visiting adult sites. This led Mr Ramburuth to tender his resignation with immediate effect. The Minister for Economic Development, Ebrahim Patel, replaced Mr Ramburuth with Thembinkosi Bonakele as acting competition commissioner. Let's take a closer look at what went on...

The now former head of the Competitions Commission, Shan Ramburuth, “spent R123,000 on porn sites while overseas in October 2011,” reports Fin24. An investigation led to the findings that Mr Ramburuth “visited 25 pornographic sites between August and November 2011 at the expense of the commission”.

The news follows an individual who is credited in playing “a key role in major mergers in SA, including Walmart and Massmart, adds Fin24. Adding to this, he also “headed the investigations into the anti-competitive practises in the construction sector”.

The news about his expensive online activities led to Mr Ramburuth tendering his resignation with immediate effect, notes MoneyWeb. The Minister for Economic Development, Ebrahim Patel, was quick to find a replacement.

Thembinkosi Bonakele will step in for six months at the helm of the commission

Later on yesterday, the minister “appointed Thembinkosi Bonakele as the new acting competition commissioner,” adds MoneyWeb. His position is in effect from today and will last for a period of six months.

Mr Bonakele is to take over Mr Ramburuth's duties “while a recruitment process is undertaken to appoint a new commissioner, reports BDLive. Mr Bonakele held the deputy commissioner position until earlier this year when he resigned after “a leadership challenge” with Mr Ramburuth.

So over the coming six months, a new commissioner will be found to take over the reins from Mr Bonakele.
