Tips for choosing the right tax practitioner

by , 29 July 2014

Filing your annual tax return is quite a challenge and most people seek the services of a tax professional who can do all the work for them.

It's important to make a smart, carefully researched decision when choosing a tax professional to file your tax return and keep you informed about the latest changes in tax laws.

Here are some tips for choosing the right tax practitioner in times of need.

1. Make sure the tax practitioner is registered

Tax practitioners should be registered with Sars and with an approved controlling body, such as the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants or the South African Institute of Tax Professionals.

Before choosing a tax practitioner, make sure that they are registered with Sars and with a controlling body.

You can contact the controlling body to verify his membership and ask to see his Sars practitioner number.

2. Make sure the tax practitioner has experience in dealing with your type of business and situation

It would be very helpful if your tax practitioner has experience in dealing with businesses of your size and field of work. Make sure the tax practitioner understands your situation and knows how to provide the best services in accordance with your business needs.

3. Make sure you understand how fees are charged

Ask the tax practitioner what the basic fees are and how they are calculated. Some professionals will charge differently depending on the complexity of the situation, others charge an hourly fee, while other charge a fixed fee for 12 months.

Do not choose a tax practitioner who charges based on a percentage of the tax refund.

4. Make sure your tax practitioner can be trusted

Professional tax practitioners will be happy to provide references and put you in touch with other satisfied clients. This only goes to show that they are doing a good job and run a respectable business.

5. Make sure you can always reach your tax practitioner

Ask for an address, an email adress, an office phone number and a mobile phone number and make sure you can always get a hold of your tax practitioner. It won’t do you any good to have a tax practitioner whom you can’t reach when you need him the most.

Choose a tax practitioner who can provide references, who has an office and a professional-looking website. This will help make sure that you receive only high quality services.
