A shining star born from the artistic diversity of our flavourful nation

by , 23 September 2014

Along the banks of the Eerste River lies one of the very first farms established in Stellenbosch way back in 1692. A restored manor house, a remarkable collection of Cape Dutch Gables and the oldest wine cellar in the country make up Spier Farm's rich cultural heritage.

Not only has Spier become a shining star in South Africa's winemaking community, but the farm's most recent owners have also turned it into a centre for the arts, housing one of the most extensive collections of contemporary art in the country.

As a result, Spier Farm has positioned itself as a major tourist destination for both its fine wines as well as the various artistic outreach programs carried out on the premises. One of these programs includes the Creative Block, after which a range of award-winning wines was inspired.

A wine greater than the sum of its parts

The Spier Farm is a passionate supporter of South African artists and thus the Creative Block outreach program was first started to enable emerging talents to earn an immediate and reliable source of income and venture out into unknown artistic territories.

Select artists are invited to transform blocks in any way they choose which are then sold for R1200 each and will ultimately hang together to build an artwork greater than the sum of its parts.

The farm’s cellar master, Frans Smit, recognised the synergy between this project and the process of blending grapes from various wine varietals in order to create wines that are greater than the sum of their parts.

It was this project that inspired the Spier Creative Block range of wines, made up of three beautifully balanced blends that are packed with fruit and flavour.

Introducing gold-medal-winner Spier Creative Block 5 2013

As the name suggests, this red blend is made from five wine varietals namely: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot and was created to ensure the ultimate balance between fruit, palate volume, oak extract and tannin.

Juicy plum, spicy black olives and black cherries tantalize the nose while ripe cherries and plum show on a richly rewarding palate with subtle oak-derived flavours of cinnamon and cloves.

This unique blend has been recognised for its high quality on numerous occasions, having been awarded four stars by the Platte Wine Guide 2014 and gold medals at both the International Wine and Spirits 2013 and Mundus Vini 2013 awards.

Spier Creative Block 5 2013 is a clear winner, especially served with braised lamb shanks in plum sauce on butternut mash.
