How to pour the perfect glass of wine every time, drip-free

by , 11 December 2014

Pouring a glass of wine without dripping is a particularly troublesome issue if you're pouring red wine and there's a white tablecloth to contend with. It can be especially nerve-wrecking when you have a table full of guests to serve.

The good news is, there are a couple of things you can do to ensure you pour every glass drip-free.

Read on to find out what you need to do…

Before you start pouring wine, do this

Before you even approach the first wine glass to fill or top up, get yourself a serviette at the ready.

You can use this to wipe the spout of the wine bottle after each pour.

If you’re serving a number of people, even the best of wine pourers will accumulate a few drips around the lip of the bottle.

If you want to add an expert flair to your wine pouring, pour the wine with the wine label facing out. This will allow your guests to see what you’re pouring.

Get familiar with how much wine to put in a glass

To perfect your wine pouring technique, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with how much wine is in a standard serving.

A good idea is to measure out some water into one of your wine glasses that equates to a standard serving. This is generally between 150ml and 180ml.

Practice pouring this amount into a couple of glasses until you get a feel for the right amount.

How to avoid the dreaded drips from your wine bottle

This all comes down to the way you twist the bottle of wine when you stop pouring.

As soon as you stop pouring, rotate the bottom of the bottle away from you. The key to this is practice, practice and more practice.

You could use an empty wine bottle filled with water to put your technique to the test.

Doing this throws any little drips of wine that are trying to escape right back into the bottle.

So there you have it. How to pour the perfect glass of wine every time, drip-free.
