The most expensive Scotch whisky

This is the rare Macallan “M”. This sold for an astounding $628,205 (R6.5 million) in January at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong.

This rare whisky is the result of two years of work by Macallan’s resident whisky maker. He spent the time selecting seven casks from nearly 200,000 to blend to create “M”.

The second most expensive Scotch whisky

This is also from the Macallan distillery, Mark S Smith in Sovereign Society explains. This whisky came in a Lalique Cire Perdue crystal decanter.

The 1946 single malt sold in 2010 for $460,000 (R4.8 million). This whisky is a combination of three different casks, all built from sherry-seasoned Spanish oak, from 1942, 1945 and 1946.

The third most expensive Scotch whisky

This single malt dates back to the end of 1955.

William Grant founded Glenfiddich. When his granddaughter passed away at the age of 110, the company honoured her with 15 bottles from this barrel.

The family kept four. The remainder went to auction. One went for $94,000 (R977,600).
