With the fuel price set to fall sharply, the Department of Energy says there will be enough fuel available over the festive period

by , 23 December 2014

The Department of Energy says that motorists can look forward to a substantial drop in the price of fuel come the start of the New Year.

With many motorists taking to the road to visit family and friends, and to go on their summer holidays, concerns have been growing about the availability of fuel.

But the Department of Energy says that oil companies have issued assurances that there will be enough fuel to keep motorists on the move.

Let's take a closer look at what's going on…

Fuel prices look set to drop for a third month in a row

As the oil price continues to hover above $60 a barrel, motorists can look forward to a “third consecutive cut” in the fuel price, says BDLive. The Department of Energy says there will be “a ‘significant’ fuel price decrease in January”.

In spite of the rand weakening against the dollar, the benefits of a falling oil price will still pass through to South African motorists, adds BDLive. The price is down some 40% since the start of the year.

But with so many motorists taking to the roads over the festive period, concern has turned to the availability of fuel.

The Department of Energy says there shouldn’t be any problems with the availability of fuel

The Department of Energy says “oil companies have provided assurances that petrol and diesel will be available throughout the country,” reports Fin24. The festive period is “one of the busiest periods” in the year for fuel.

The department also took the opportunity to remind South Africans about the pressures on the country’s power supply, adds Fin24. In a statement it said everyone should “conserve power” where they can.

Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson stated a similar message, notes iAfrica. She reminded “motorists to drive safely, observe speed limits and always conserve energy – fuel or electricity”.

So motorists have a hefty fuel price cut to look forward to in the New Year and assurances of a plentiful supply of petrol and diesel whilst on their travels.
