Eskom appoints an acting CEO as Dames is due to step down on Monday

by , 27 March 2014

Earlier today, Eskom revealed that it had appointed an acting chief executive officer. This follows the resignation of current CEO Brian Dames. He's due to step down from his post on Monday. Let's take a closer look at the changes at the helm of Eskom…

Collin Matjila will take over from Brian Dames

The former chairman of the National Energy Regulator of SA, Collin Matjila, is set to take over as acting CEO at Eskom from Monday, says IOL. This as Mr Dames prepares to leave his post at the end of the month.

Currently, Mr Matjila is a non-executive director on Eskom’s board, says MoneyWeb. After Eskom find a suitable replacement for Mr Dames, Mr Matjila will return to his current post as a non-executive director.

Eskom continues to seek the right person to take over permanently from Mr Dames.

Eskom are searching for a new CEO

Eskom has employed the skills of “an executive search agency” to help the utility’s board find the right person for the job, says BDLive. Zola Tsotsi, the chairman of Eskom, says they’re seeking to find a candidate with the “depth of leadership and skills to deliver” on the position.

Mr Dames has been with Eskom since 1987, says Fin24. He took over as CEO in July 2010 after different “management positions” and after being a “member of the executive committee” since 2004.

Speaking of Mr Dames, Mr Tsotsi said Eskom is “indebted to him for his life-long contributions to the company,” says IOL. Mr Tsotsi also believes that Mr Matjila is suitable for filling the role at the moment with his place on Eskom’s tender committee for almost three years”.

Time will tell how long it takes Eskom to find a suitable replacement for Mr Dames and take over as CEO of Eskom.
