by , 30 November 2015

If you want to invest in unit trusts, you'll soon find out that there are a large number out there to consider.

So where should you look to find out everything you need to know about a specific unit trust?

You need to look at its fact sheet…

What is a unit trust’s fact sheet?

All unit trusts have a fact sheet. As well as for unit trusts, you’ll also find fact sheets for exchange traded funds (ETFs) too.
A fact sheet contains a lot of information that will help you to pick the right unit trusts for you to invest in.

What you’ll find on a unit trust’s fact sheet

Risk rating
On a scale of one to five, you’ll find out what risk rating a unit trust has. A rating of one is low, a rating of five is high.
The fact sheet will detail the aim of the fund and what its goals are. There is also a section of the type of investors suited to investing in the unit trust.
Term of investment
The fact sheet also details how long you should consider investing in the fund for. Some funds are best suited to short-term investments whereas others are best suited to longer-term investments.
Information about the unit trust
You should also find key information such as when the unit trust began, who the fund manager is, assets under management and what its benchmark is.
There is a section detailing the different costs. This includes initial costs and annual costs. If it’s an actively managed fund, the performance fee will be included.
The fact sheet will also show you how much you can invest on a monthly basis or as a lump sum.
The fact sheet will detail the performance of the fund over one, three and five years, and perhaps longer depending on how long the fund has been about.
It will show you the performance of the fund in comparison to its benchmark index.
There will be a list of the fund’s top holdings, for example, what shares it invests in.
So there you have it. Why you should check out a unit trust’s fact sheet if you want to find out more about it.

It's easy to understand why ETFs are a hot investment - And it's no secret that I'm a huge fan of them.
They have minimal fees, require small contributions and on top of all that they give you a fairly diversified investment.
