Saving tips for the festive season

by , 28 November 2014

Christmas is on its way and so the shopping frenzy begins! As exciting as this time of the year may be, it's also one of the costliest. If you have a big family and tons of presents to buy, you're likely to go bankrupt before Christmas even begins!

If money is an issue this festive season, there are various ways to reduce your expenses and enjoy Christmas without going overboard with your spending.

Here are seven top saving tips for the festive season.
1. Plan your shopping
Make lists of everything you need to buy: food, gifts, decorations, and extras. Also make a list of people who you want to offer presents to: friends, relatives, neighbors, acquaintances, etc. Then create a budget for each category and set a spending limit for gifts, so you don’t overspend.
2. Avoid buying more than you need
This is a common mistake that makes you go over budget. Don’t be fooled by special offers, such as buy three items and get one free, if you don’t really need that item. Stick to what is on the shopping list and don’t make exceptions without having a good reason.
3. Re-use last year’s decorations
You don’t need to buy new Christmas decorations every year – this is a costly habit. Before jumping at the opportunity to buy new decorations, check to see if your older ones could be re-used.
4. Buy some presents after Christmas
If you’ll be meeting certain family members or friends after the holidays and don’t need to have the gifts ready on Christmas day, you can wait and buy their presents after the 25th, when prices go down and there are thousands of items on sale.
5. Look out for special and last-minute discounts on the internet
Stay up to date with your favorite brands’ activity on social media because that’s where many promotions and sales are being advertised. Also make sure to use price comparison sites and daily deal websites before going Christmas shopping, to find the best deals.
6. Use eBay and Amazon to find cheaper gifts
If you’re having trouble staying on budget, try reducing expenses by shopping on eBay and Amazon.
7. Have everyone bring something to the Christmas table
To save on Christmas grocery shopping, ask everyone invited to bring their favorite dish or dessert. This way, you save time and money.
