Anglo American Platinum employs over 49,700 people. The majority of the company’s mines are in South Africa in the Bushveld Complex, but it also has a mine in Zimbabwe. With the exception of one of its mines, which is an open pit, Anglo American Platinum’s mines are underground operations.

Anglo American Platinum has a listing is on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange under ticker AMS. The company listed in 1977. Its headquarters are in Johannesburg. Anglo American [JSE:AGL], its parent company, owns 79.91% of Anglo American Platinum.

As well as producing PGMs, Anglo American Platinum also produces other commodities. These are copper, cobalt sulphate, sodium sulphate and nickel. It also produces some gold.

Platinum is a rare metal. To put it in perspective, all the gold mined to date would fill three Olympic sized swimming pools. An Olympic pool is 50 metres by 25 metres. In contrast, all the platinum mined would only reach your ankles in one Olympic size pool.
