At the end of its 2014 financial year, BHP Billiton operated in 21 countries, employing about 123,800 people.
BHP Billiton has five listings, including one here on the JSE. When the merger of Australian listed BHP Ltd and UK listed Billiton Plc took place, the new company operated as a dual listed company. These companies continue to have separate listings, but operate as the same company.
So BHP Billiton Plc has its primary listing on the London Stock Exchange [LSE:BLT], and has a listing here [JSE:BIL] and on the New York Stock Exchange [NYSE:BBL]. BHP Billiton Ltd has its primary listing on the Australian Stock Exchange [ASX:BHP] and has a listing on the New York Stock Exchange too [NYSE:BHP].
BHP Billiton listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in January 1997.
BHP Billiton concentrates on the production of the following commodities:
Coal (both metallurgical and thermal);
Petroleum and potash.
In May 2015, BHP Billiton demerged some of its operations to form a new company, South 32 Ltd [JSE:S32]. These operations focus on aluminium, nickel, manganese, coal, silver, lead and zinc.
The roots of BHP Billiton go way back to the 1800s. Billiton began running a tin mine in 1860 on an island in Indonesia, called Billiton (Belitung). BHP dates back to 1885 as a silver, lead and zinc mine in Broken Hill in Australia.
