The JSE crashed 14.45% between 2 March 2022 and 9 May 2022.
Similarly, the Dow Jones index in the USA is down 10.74% year to date of which half of this drop has been in the past month. And the S&P 500 index is down 14.75% year to date.
We hear about inflation, war, lockdowns, supply chain issues all as contributing to this bear market…
So, what is fuelling the market's drop - and are we... ››› more
The next time you travel to Europe, it might be very affordable.
You may actually be able to travel to the hotel of your choice, eat at any restaurant and enjoy the tourist attractions without hurting your pocket.

It's been a tough start for equity markets this year. Last night the Dow fell more than 600 points, which is the worst decline yet in 2022. And that's saying something. As I warned in November last year (near record highs for the tech-heavy Nasdaq) higher inflation numbers will put pressure on growth stocks.
The Nasdaq composite fell another -2.9% last night. That means the index is now down -1... ››› more
I have an important notice for you.
First, I am not a BIG bear when it comes to Bitcoin. I know in the medium to long run, it's going to continue to make all time highs.
However, since November 2021 I have been shorting (selling) Bitcoin and have been making decent profits.
In fact, I sent out an analysis on how I expected the price to drop from $50,000 to $40,000.
And it did exactly... ››› more
If you're a crypto investor, you're sitting through a major pullback right now.
And you're probably looking at a painful decline in your crypto portfolio value maybe 20%, even 50%.
So is this current weakness just standard volatility, like we've seen for years, or is this time different - a sustained bear market?
Well it may be a tough moment for crypto investors, but it's not time to ... ››› more
A bear market refers to a widespread decline in asset prices of at least 20%.
We've seen stock markets fall 20% and more in recent months. The oil price fell through the floor, and unemployment is soaring.
This is not a fun time to be in, and you might be confused, panicked or just blown away.
The good news is, this is only a phase - and it will also pass. Things will turn around and l... ››› more
It was quite a week for airline stocks.
It started with the announcement from Warren Buffett that Berkshire Hathaway had sold stakes in four major US airlines: United, Delta, Southwest and American Airlines.
This is an exceptionally uncharacteristic move from the legendary value investor.
Firstly, Buffett is all about “buy and hold”. He rarely sells investments unless, the prospect... ››› more
March 2020, will be known as one of the most brutal months that the JSE and the equity markets have ever seen.
On 12 March, the index fell 9.51% and a further 11.98% on 16 March - two of the biggest daily drops since the 2008 Financial Crash.
CEO - JSE, Leila Fourie, said in an interview about the value drop and trade volumes:
“Over the past few weeks on average we've been processing... ››› more
Unless you live under a rock, you'll know global markets have fallen dramatically over the last few days. Many major indices are now in bear market territory, having fallen more than 20% from highs. Some sectors, like energy, have fallen even further.
It's total carnage out there!
But, if you're a regular reader, you can't say we didn't warn you about this…

Brent crude has had an abysmal start of the year.
As things stand, the price is hovering around $50 per barrel which is the lowest it's been in over 12 months.
A major, if not ONLY factor, that's resulted in the drop in brent crude is the Coronavirus.
As I write this, the virus has already infected more than 17,000 Chinese people and more than 350 have died. The numbers are rising on... ››› more
Yesterday saw global stock markets retreat, sending the JSE and other emerging markets into a tailspin. This is on the back of the Coronavirus and a missile attack on the US embassy in Bagdad.
But if it wasn't for this, it would have been something else… Investor sentiment has been high, pushing major US indices to all-time highs and others including the JSE to recent highs.

Sometimes taking a contrarian view of a market or investment, can pay off big time…
One of my all-time favourite investors, Benjamin Graham, proved this nearly 100 years - during the Great Depression.
When stocks crashed nearly 70%, Benjamin Graham didn't give up and avoid the stock market.
In fact, he saw this as a perfect opportunity to make money by pinpointing bargain stocks from... ››› more
I'm sure you've heard of portfolio rebalancing. Almost every investor does it.
It's a simple, but extremely important ‘tool' where an investor periodically buys or sells different assets (stocks, bonds, etc) within a portfolio.
Rebalancing helps reduce the risk an investor suffers from the changes in returns of various investments. And it also helps ‘restore' their desired asset allocatio... ››› more
Right now, many investors are scrambling to find assets that don't follow the swings of the stock market.

It is almost certain to hold its value over time.
