In February 2024, Deutsche Telekom (parent company of T-Mobile) unveiled something historic at the 2024 Mobile World Congress. Something that could kick-off a new AI revolution…But it had nothing to do with computers, laptops, data centres or a new app. Instead, Deutsche Telekom, with collaboration from Qualcomm and Brain.ai revealed a visionary “AI phone” concept.
Instead of juggling a bunch of apps to get things done, Deutsche Telekom’s concept phone uses AI to handle everything for you. Think of it as having a super-smart assistant right in your pocket.
According to Deutsche Telekom, this’ll happen faster than you might think: In 5-10 years, they say, we won’t even remember what apps are. We’ll just tell the AI what we want to do, and it’ll make it happen.
Fast-forward a few months on, and one of the most valuable companies in the world announced its foray into AI phones…
And it could be a huge deal.
Introducing “Apple AI”…
In a recent keynote presentation, Apple finally unveiled its highly anticipated and long-overdue blueprint for the AI Race…
Its new Apple Intelligence system.
Interestingly, Apple explained exactly what its AI is not going to do.
Apple is not creating AI to help companies make better products or market them more efficiently. Nor is it creating AI to automate business tasks.
Instead, Apple Intelligence aims to build AI that helps billions of people do everyday tasks more easily.
In other words, Apple is turning the iPhone into a hyper-personalised AI assistant.
Imagine your iPhone equipped with a custom AI model tailored to your needs, wants, schedule, etc.
This AI knows your favourite restaurants, the sports you follow, the news feeds you read, how you craft emails and texts, the music you listen to, the shows you watch, and more.
Siri is also getting a major upgrade. It will pull data across multiple apps to perform cross-app actions, like taking a dinner reservation from an iMessage conversation with your friends or family and adding it to your calendar.
Apple and OpenAI join forces…
Apple also confirmed it is working with OpenAI to natively integrate ChatGPT into the iPhone through Siri. This collaboration is significant.
With Apple’s data and OpenAI’s AI models, Apple Intelligence is equipped with the most f powerful tech in the AI Race.
Now, you might think that these new features aren’t really that ground-breaking, however, just remember, it’s Apple first step in its AI journey.
The company will continue to improve the technology in the coming months. When the journey is complete, Apple Intelligence could become a huge money-maker for Apple as demand for AI phones rise.
I’ll keep you updated on the latest events and investment opps in the AI Mobile sphere in South African Investor.
